Julie Keon created one-of-a-kind prenatal classes to offer an alternative to traditional prenatal classes. Hearing comments like, “Prenatal classes are boring” and “a waste of time,” motivated Julie to change the way people viewed childbirth education. By combining her training/ education, professional experience, and common sense, Julie has developed a course, which will realistically prepare couples for the journey of birth and new parenthood. Julie’s “tell-it-like-it-is” teaching style, sense of humour and extensive experience and knowledge make these classes a must for expectant families in Ottawa and the Ottawa valley. The classes offered in the Ottawa Valley are available in group setting or private sessions and are open to all expectant families. Group and private sessions take place at the Whitewater-Bromley Community Health Centre in Cobden. See below for more info on Ottawa classes.

In March of 2007, Julie launched a new prenatal series, which is offered exclusively to all clients of midwives in Ottawa and surrounding areas. The Midwifery Collective of Ottawa invited Julie to teach these classes with hopes of preparing their clients more effectively than traditional classes were able to do. Being in a group of like- minded couples who can speak openly of home and hospital birth, fears/worries and the healthy pain of labour and birth can make a tremendous difference in how couples go into their births and postpartum period. Of course, topics such as unexpected outcomes, interventions, compassionate use of epidurals/medications and cesarean births are also covered.

The feedback received from participants of this series has been very encouraging and positive.

"Your classes helped me decide on a med-free birth and reduced my fears about labour!"

"I really enjoyed the class. I feel much more confident going into labour and it was so nice to see a positive approach to birth and the pain involved."

"Julie was extremely knowledgeable and told things in an open and honest manner~ no sugar-coating which was welcomed!"

"Good material, great resources/references. Instructor had a great sense of humour and kept material interesting!"
